Move over, Project Ara: There is yet another competitor out in the tech world trying to steal your thunder: The PuzzlePhone. Modular Phones are really starting to take off as the public gets behind the idea of a customisable, eco-friendly, wallet-saving device that you can incrementally upgrade throughout a year instead of scrapping your current device for a completely new one.
Circle Devices, a company based in Finland, is currently working on the smart and classy PuzzlePhone, which is detachable into three parts: the Spine, Heart, and Brain. The Spine is the backbone of the device (duh!), and houses the speakers, screen, and structure of the smartphone. The Heart is the battery and secondary electronics, and the Brain is the processor and camera of the PuzzlePhone. The assembly is simpler than Project Ara or other modular devices, but that just may be what it takes to go mainstream.
Circular Devices started the project in 2013 and claims to be on track to release a mid-range priced functioning device in Q3 or Q4 of 2015. The PuzzlePhone will run on Android at first, but the company says it is considering other OS’s for the future.
If you really like the design and want to see this concept take over the world, keep spreading the word! Modular phones will never make it to primetime until every person in the targeted nations is talking about the future of mobile devices.
